In Chapter 10, Tony is an integral part of the story for not only Amanda but Nina and Carrie. Because he is a kind and gentle man, Amanda has easily fallen back in love, and he opens her heart in a way she never thought.

Still, Amanda is not ready to go forward with a real relationship and resigns Tony to being just a good friend with benefits. They take their relationship slow, enjoying each other’s company and taking each day as it comes. Amanda fears jumping into a relationship with Tony might be too traumatizing for Carrie, and Tony is willing to wait however long it takes for her to be ready.

However, she makes a decision to try a “little” introduction to Tony while Carrie is staying the weekend. To Amanda’s surprise, Carrie takes to him instantly when he calls her pretty at their first meeting and watches the way he makes her smile and laugh. In fact, Carrie suggests to her mother that Tony should them at the movies! Amanda can’t believe it! She had been so afraid that Jack had damaged her and made her hate men. But as she’s seeing, that’s not the case at all, and she’s relieved. Plus, the way Tony is with her warms her heart.

And Amanda’s fears of holding back the relationship because of her daughter start to dissipate when she sees him more and more with her daughter.

Carrie’s relationship with Tony was inspired by the 1978 movie The Good-Bye Girl with Richard Dreyfus and Marsha Mason. It’s such a great movie and if you haven’t seen it, I invite you to. It’s a timeless classic in my opinion, as well as a time capsule for the mid-seventies. You will fall in love with Dreyfus’ Oscar winning performance of Elliot Garfield easily. One of my favorite parts of the movie is the relationship that Elliot develops with Lucy in the film, and it’s one that I wanted to use as a base for Tony and Carrie’s relationship too. Written by the late and amazing Neil Simon, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. I almost had the opportunity to meet Richard Dreyfus last year at Chiller Theater but due to my work I wasn’t able to go.

Tony is able to get Carrie to trust him by making her laugh and telling her all of the good that he sees in her. In Tony, Carrie sees a friend that she can trust and joke with. It makes Amanda relieved to see her daughter be happy instead of angry and sad all the time. Amanda still feels guilty for what Jack had done to Carrie. Tony is a breath of fresh air for both. He brings happiness and joy to their lives in a way both never could imagine. Especially after all of the sadness that both Amanda and Carrie have suffered.

In Chapter 11, we get both Nina and Amanda in the same episode, and we get to meet Nina’s agent Rachel. I had a lot of fun with this episode. I hope you do too.

See you soon!

Carrie likes to be silly, and Tony thinks it's hysterical.

Thanks for watching. See you next time.
